CTSCC YEAR IN REVIEW FOR 2008

We made it through an exciting, and sometimes tumultuous, year. As
the political landscape has changed and the economy evolves, our
local chapter has remained strong and unified.
As I’ve thought about writing this article, recalling specific highlights
from this past year, a few notable memories pop into my mind. My
favorite was awarding our first Lifetime Commitment Award to Don
Feliciano in November. He is not only a founding member but has
dedicated the last 25 years to the Connecticut Chapter. The emotion
from the award presentation and the support of our members, who
came in numbers to the meeting, was truly something our chapter can
be proud of.
Another fun highlight was our summer-turned-fall baseball event. The
rain reschedule turned out to be a benefit in disguise. We ended up
with a perfect fall day, crisp and cool with blue skies and an
abundance of food. The home team pulled off a victory in the 9th
inning to the excitement of the crowd and our attendees.
One of the continued events I’m most pleased with is our Chemists
Can bring a Helping Hand program. Throughout the year we’ve
collected canned goods to help feed those less fortunate. In October
and November, we expanded the initiative to include winter coats and
the donations were impressive. It’s nice to see that our members
continue to help others, especially when economic times are more
difficult.
Of course, I don’t want to leave out the educational highlights from
this past year. We had a fantastic scientific seminar in October.
Steve Puleo did a great job putting together presentations which
challenged us beyond everyday topics. In January we were welcomed
by Unilever to hold a supplier poster session and were honored to
have Gary Agism provide national support as well as deliver a
fantastic presentation. We thank all of our presenters from
throughout the year who took time out of their busy schedules to
expand the knowledge of our members.
I am definitely looking forward to 2009. We already have some
exciting meetings planned. For example, in January Dr. Henry Lee will
be discussing the art of forensic science with us. This should be a
very interesting presentation given his highly publicized case history.
Be sure to check our website at www.ctscc.org for all of our upcoming
events and I hope to see you at future meetings!
