COURSE OUTLINE

The objective of this course is to help provide a practical understanding of the principles behind cosmetic flow, how it is measured and its applications in the cosmetic area.  It will also go into detail examining rheological behaviors, the profiles of some commercially successful products, and some hands-on discovery.

RHEOLOGICAL PRINCIPLES

Shear Stress, Shear Strain, Shear Rate, Viscosity, Yield Values

FLOW BEHAVIORS

Newtonian, Plastic, Pseudoplastic, Dilatent, Thixotropic, Viscoelastic.  Commerical examples of different flows.

INSTRUMENTATION

Simple Viscometers vs Complex Rheometers.  Rotational, Concentric Cylinder, Cone and Plate, Oscillatory and Controlled Stress (Creep) Rheometers. Commerical Rheometer comparisons, Interpreting rheological profiles.
